Apple and Google have come under serious pressure from many governments in recent years. Apple, which was under many investigations and sanctions due to its monopoly behavior, had to bow to the wishes of the Netherlands. From now on, dating apps in the Netherlands will be able to use alternative payment methods other than the App Store.
Apple agrees to abide by the rules after millions of euros fines
Last year, the Netherlands Consumers and Markets Authority mandated alternative payment methods for dating apps. Apple, who did not comply with this rule, was fined 5 million Euros every week for 10 weeks. Although Apple later changed the App Store rules, which had to pay a total fine of 50 million Euros, the Netherlands did not accept the new rules and imposed more fines on Apple. After nearly a year, Apple finally allowed alternative payment methods for dating apps like Tinder. “Apple has changed its unfair terms and will now allow different payment methods on dating apps in the Netherlands,” the Dutch Authority said. In addition, stating that Apple does not take responsibility for keeping the market fair and open, the institution seriously criticized Apple.
