The leader of the foldable phone market, Samsung improves its devices every year. In addition, brands such as Oppo and Xiaomi have seriously developed foldable phone technology. This market, which attracts more and more users every day, is expected to grow even more in the coming years. Foldable phones, which Apple has started to research, require serious improvements, especially in terms of screens. Apparently, this is why Apple requests a special display technology from LG and Samsung.

Apple does not want their devices to show fold marks
According to The Elec’s report, Apple does not want wrinkles to appear on foldable screens, so it wants Samsung and LG to develop hybrid OLED panels. Typical OLED panels use glass in their substrate, while flexible OLED panels use a plastic substrate for added protection. Apple wants to produce hybrid OLED panels based on both glass and plastic using the thin encapsulation method.
In flexible panels, the plastic layers are separated from the glass layers by laser, causing creases in the plastic layer. To avoid these problems and get Apple’s orders, Samsung and LG are trying to develop an ultra-thin glass sheet to be used in hybrid OLED panels. This layer will be 2mm thin instead of 5mm like standard sheets and will make stretching significantly easier. The technology is still in development and will take several years to reach Apple’s orders. Some sources stated that the crease seen in foldable phones is not bothersome and Apple wants to use this technology on a foldable iPad model.
