According to an Apple press release by 9to5Mac, Apple TVs will have native VPN app support with tvOS 17.
This is one of many features not mentioned in the keynote at WWDC 2023. But for some users it can be very important. Native VPN support stands out as one of the rare advantages that Google’s Chromecast or Amazon’s Fire TV devices currently have over Apple TV.
Native VPN support is already available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and adding this feature to Apple TVs is potentially very promising. A VPN not only means you can watch TV shows and use apps that are not available in your home country, but it can also create a separate layer for your cybersecurity.
Other new tvOS 17 features announced in the announcement include enhanced dialogue and Dolby Vision 8.1 support, which separates the dialogue from background noise and directs it to your center channel. There will also be updates to Apple Fitness+ that add custom workout and meditation plans that you can plan around things like your day, preferred duration, and type of exercise. Alongside these are bundled workouts, which are basically a workout playlist option, and Audio Focus, which lets you prioritize the sound of music or the voices of Apple’s trainers.
