The global chip shortage continues to affect many industries and companies directly and indirectly. According to new information, Apple’s display supplier, the Chinese BOE, is facing production problems in OLED panels for iPhones due to chip shortages, which will affect production this month and next month.
BOE wants to increase its share
BOE supplies Apple’s display driver integrated circuits for iPhone display panels from LX Semicon. In response to increased demand, LX Semicon’s low production capacity will delay shipments to the BOE. Another reason for the delay is that LX Semicon gives priority to LG Display.
According to TheElec, Apple is expected to order up to 10 million OLED panels for iPhones from BOE in the first half of 2022. A familiar group says BOE aims to ship more than 40 million OLED panels for iPhones to Apple by the end of the year. The chip problems experienced along with all of this show that it is not possible to achieve the year-end targets.
Apple’s iPhone Samsung Display ranks first with a share of approximately 60% in the supply of OLED panels used in the ‘s. In second place is LG Display with about 20%. BOE is also behind these two, but the Chinese company wants to increase its share here.
