When Apple introduced the new iPhone 15 series last week, it also said hello to the USB-C port instead of Lightning on iPhones. And now we have some more details about the features of this port.
According to an Apple support document reported via MacRumors, the USB-C port on all iPhone 15 models will output up to 4.5W of power. In other words, this power output will have enough power to charge an Apple Watch, AirPods case, or other small devices.
As 9to5Mac points out, the Lightning port on previous iPhones offered around 0.3W of power. That’s why there are now many more options for accessories. For example, an external, portable, USB-powered hard drive can be connected via this port.
USB 3.2 Gen 2 for data transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps
Another important information revealed in the document is that iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will support USB 3.2 Gen 2 for data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps. However, since the USB-C cable included with these phones only supports USB 2 speeds, you’ll need to get a different cable to maximize data transfer speeds.
As previously reported, this document also confirms that all iPhone 15 models support DisplayPort output for up to 4K HDR screen mirroring on an external display.
With pre-orders now being processed and the phones set to be available in stores on September 22nd, this information fills in some remaining spec gaps. It can easily be said that the switch to USB-C is one of the biggest changes since the iPhone series was first released in 2007.
