Apple was caught off-guard last year when OpenAI, Microsoft and Google launched their own versions of chatbots leveraging advances in Generative Artificial Intelligence technologies. But it looks like the company is finally ready to compete with companies in the field of artificial intelligence.
According to the news published by Bloomberg, Apple is working on the Large Language Model (LLM), which its employees call “Apple GPT”. The Cupertino giant first set up the Ajax foundation last year to consolidate machine learning development, but now focuses primarily on Generative AI technologies.
Bloomberg also noted that Apple is intensifying its efforts to develop a compressed AI system that could fit well into the company’s ecosystem. A different group is also working to address privacy concerns surrounding the technology.
In an interview in May, Tim Cook said that although he uses ChatGPT and follows the field closely, Generative AI technologies still have a long way to go.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple has already distributed the Apple GPT to its employees for use at work. The app was stopped last year due to security concerns but has since expanded to include more employees. According to Apple employees, the chatbot is similar to Google Bard and Microsoft Bing AI and can be accessed via a web browser. Unfortunately, it doesn’t include any new features or technology.
There is currently no word on when Apple plans to release the new technology to the public. There is even uncertainty about whether this robot can be used by everyone or whether it will be limited to Apple’s ecosystem.
