According to a new rumor leaked backstage, Apple is preparing to show ads on the Today tab of the App Store and on app pages. These two new ad placements will be expanded to include ads you can already see in the search tab and in search results in the App Store.

Ads in the Today tab will appear in the form of a large card used by other content on that tab, but will have a small blue box with the word “Ad” in it below the app name. Ads will appear on individual app pages under the “You Can Like” banner suggesting apps related to the page you’re looking at. As with the App Store search, ads on app pages will be highlighted in blue for distinguishing them. Ads will be relevant to the app they’re showing under.

Apple first started showing ads in App Store search results in 2016, and began asking users for permission to enable Personalized Ads in September. The new ad spots show Apple is exploring new ways to monetize the App Store. Unfortunately for users, that means encountering pesky blue boxes in more places.
