Apple is increasing its investments in satellite connectivity. In this context, it invested more in the company with which it partnered in satellite technology. Apple has committed $1.1 billion to develop GlobalStar’s network.
$1.1 billion satellite deal between Apple and GlobalStar
Apple invested an additional $1.1 billion in GlobalStar and acquired a 20 percent stake in the company. Thus, it has greatly expanded its goals in the field of satellite connectivity. This strategic move by the company will offer iPhone users the opportunity to leverage satellite technology to offer innovative features beyond emergencies.
With the release of iOS 18 last year, Apple introduced the feature of sending text messages via satellite. This partnership will enable Apple to continue improving its satellite connectivity capabilities.
The $1.1 billion upfront payment to GlobalStar will strengthen the company’s satellite infrastructure and increase the scope of satellite services offered on iPhones. Of course, we should point out that Apple currently offers the Emergency Satellite SOS service for free. This free trial period will end in 2025.
The company is expected to later monetize the service through subscription or carrier-based plans. Possible revenue models could include tiered pricing or combining satellite access with Apple One subscriptions.
This technology, which comes with iOS 18 and can be used on iPhone 14 and above models, allows users to send messages, updated emojis and Tapbacks by holding their devices towards the satellite. This feature, which also supports SMS messaging, ensures security with end-to-end encryption.
