It is known that Apple will have to abandon Ligtning and switch to USB-C on its upcoming iPhones to comply with changes in European Union laws. A recent post on Weibo suggests that Apple has developed a Lightning-compatible integrated circuit board to be used with USB-C.

Behind this interesting solution is claimed to be able to control exactly what functions the card can perform – such as enabling or disabling certain features – if any USB-C cable or device is plugged into the port. In this way, Apple can only offer full functionality with its own cables. A standard USB-C cable, on the other hand, will only serve basic functions like charging. Likewise, a USB-C cable not made by Apple may not support fast charging.

At the moment, this is all just a rumor posted to Weibo, and the existence of this circuit board has yet to be confirmed. If true, such a card could also provide backward compatibility with Lightning accessories.
