We’ve been hearing for a while that eSIMs (Embedded SIM) may soon replace physical SIM cards, and we know that some versions of phones will start to be sold without a removable SIM card, so it looks like the iPhone 14 could be the phone to kick off that transition.

At least that’s the case, according to The Wall Street Journal. The publication says a subset of the 2022 iPhone family could potentially depend on just one eSIM. eSIM can be defined as a non-removable digital SIM card built into the phone rather than removing a tray from the side of the phone and inserting a physical SIM card. So when changing carriers/networks, a new number can be programmed into this digital SIM instead of inserting a physical card.

However, we can say that it is very unlikely that this change will be given to you by force if you buy an iPhone 14. Instead, eSIM-only models of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Max may be offered with models that support both eSIM and physical SIM cards.

There are some advantages to switching to eSIM-only phones. Because they take up less space on phones, there can be more room for larger batteries or other technologies. In addition, eSIM can support multiple networks. Also, switching networks with an eSIM is theoretically faster than with physical SIM cards. Finally, eSIMs can be more easily patched with security updates sent on a much larger scale than is possible with physical SIM cards.

So we can say that we will probably use this technology in the future, and Apple is certainly among the companies that will encourage mass adoption of this technology.
