Apple may have completely abandoned plans to use its own 5G modem in future iPhone models. After several reports saying that the company was delaying the launch of its 5G modem due to development issues, there are now major clues that it has given up on it altogether. At least for now…
As reported by Korean Naver blog user yeux1122 and confirmed by He said that it has entered the phase of “reorganizing its ongoing investment in the modem development department.”
However, it is not clear whether this means that Apple will temporarily stop the development of the 5G modem only for the iPhone SE 4 or completely.
Some news from Bloomberg reported that Apple was aiming to launch its 5G modem by the end of 2025 or early 2026. Previously, the company thought it could release the first iteration by spring 2025.
“Thousands of employees have worked on the project since 2018, and it appears that Apple is still years away from solving the problem,” the publication said in a statement. The real problem here appears to be that Cupertino needs to “seamlessly connect with hundreds of operators around the world operating in different environments and conditions,” as Qualcomm has done for years.
Initially, Apple was planning to introduce its first 5G modem with an iPhone in 2024, most likely with the iPhone SE 4. However, a day before Apple introduced its iPhone 15 models, Qualcomm announced that it would partner with the company to offer 5G modems until at least 2026.
