Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for exactly 68 billion dollars in the last week has once again moved the stones in the gaming world. While Sony’s actions are eagerly awaited against Microsoft’s move, Apple may be preparing to join the console wars with a surprise announcement.
According to new rumors from sources close to Apple, the giant company may announce a video game console developed by itself very soon. It is thought that Apple plans to have a say in the video game industry before it is too late, especially after Microsoft’s latest move.
Apple may enter the console market in 2022
Jez Corden, who works at Windows Central, stated that Apple plans to enter the video game console with the statements he made in the podcast called The Xbox Two. Corden said that he has heard that Apple has been working on various studies to enter the console market for a while, and that it has also included a number of engineers working in the Xbox department.
Windows Central reporter explained that he had heard these rumors for quite some time, but recently confirmed them from sources much closer to Apple. While Corden is almost certain that Apple is developing a video console, he does not yet know whether the console is virtual reality (VR) focused or supported.
However, considering that there are rumors that Apple has been developing virtual reality glasses for a while, it is said that the console will somehow have VR support. The latest rumor from the Apple front is that the company is also considering a metaverse integration for the console.
Although Apple has remained cold to the video game industry since its inception in 1976, the timing chosen today is quite significant. Considering that Apple has competitors at the beginning of its ecological cycle such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, it is said that this developed console will appeal to the VR-oriented, mostly digital content focused and so-called ‘casual’ player base.
