M2 Ultra announced! What are its features?
In addition to its software such as iOS 17, Apple also introduced Mac Pro, 15-inch Macbook Air, Mac Studio and iMac at the conference. These products, which are eagerly awaited all over the world, have attracted great interest from users. In addition to these, the M2 Ultra was also introduced. What we know so far is that it will include 16 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores, in addition, it will contain up to 76 GPU cores and support up to 192 GB of RAM. The M2 Ultra is the biggest and best chip Apple has ever developed. It makes the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro the most powerful Mac desktops ever. It leverages Apple’s UltraFusion technology to connect two M2 Maxs together, doubling the performance.
The M2 Ultra contains 134 billion transistors. This value is 20 billion more than the value of M1 Ultra. With a unified memory architecture supporting up to 192GB of memory capacity, it provides 50 percent more capacity than the M1 Ultra and twice the memory bandwidth of the M2 Max at 800GBps. Featuring a 20 percent more powerful CPU than the M1 Ultra chip, the chip includes a larger and up to 30 percent faster GPU and up to 40 percent faster Neural Engine.
Johny Srouji, Apple’s VP of Hardware Technologies, said of the chip:
“Combining massive performance gains in CPU, GPU and Neural Engine and massive memory bandwidth on a single SoC, the M2 Ultra is the world’s most powerful chip ever developed for personal computers.”
UltraFusion technology
The new Ultra version of the M2 consists of two M2 Max chips connected via Apple’s exclusive package technology UltraFusion. The UltraFusion architecture makes the M2 Ultra appear to software as a single chip. That means no code rewrites are required to take advantage of the M2 Ultra’s outstanding performance!
Performance and Power Efficiency of the M2 Ultra
The new Ultra version has 24 cores, including 16 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores, and offers up to 20 percent faster performance compared to the M1 Ultra. With Mac Studio powered by M2 Ultra, colorists using DaVinci Resolve can process video up to 50 percent faster than Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip.
The GPU of the new chip comes with two configuration options. It can be configured with 60 or 76 new generation cores. This means up to 12 more cores and up to 30 percent better performance compared to the M1 Ultra chip, which Apple claims has extraordinary power.
Finally, it should be noted that with the new chip, the laptop and desktop versions of Mac computers have completely transitioned to the Apple chip.
