Covid-19 pandemic measures in China have the potential to shake Apple’s smartphone production volume deeply. On the Samsung side, the faces are smiling for now. Less dependent on Chinese factories, Samsung overtook Apple in the first quarter.
Samsung ranked first in smartphone production volume
The new report shared by analytics company TrendForce examined smartphone production. With the combination of different effects such as the Ukraine-Russia war and the pandemic, the volume of smartphones shrank by 12.8 percent compared to the previous quarter and fell to 310 million.
According to the results for the first quarter of 2022, Samsung started to reap the benefits of relying less on China. Samsung, which has factories in Vietnam and India in addition to China, sold 73.8 million smartphones.
According to the research, it is not just about China that Samsung was the least affected company in the first quarter. Both the fact that the Galaxy S22 series is a remarkable flagship and the successful supply of entry-mid segment models to the end consumer increased sales.
TrendForce calculated that Apple produced 60 million iPhones in the first quarter. This figure means 11 percent growth compared to the same period last year. However, the tech giant was particularly affected by their quarantine in China, and it is thought that this may affect the iPhone 14 supply.
Chinese giant Xiaomi has appeared behind Samsung and Apple in smartphone production. It turned out that Xiaomi has sold 44.5 million smartphones, including Redmi, POCO and Black Shark models.
However, let’s not forget that a major crisis awaits Samsung. Samsung, by far the largest smartphone manufacturer in the Russian market, has stopped all shipments to the country and suspended its services. What will happen after the Russia-Ukraine war is uncertain.
