Smart watches have evolved a lot since they were first introduced. Watches, which have experienced improvements in health and sports control features over time, have also evolved in different areas. GPS is just one of them. Apple has also confirmed that Watch devices released in 2022 use a special GPS system. Well what does it mean?
Apple watches offer their own GPS system!
With the first Apple Watch, the GPS feature was added to the second generation watches after the presence of the add-on to make calls on the device. However, this feature only worked if there was an iPhone nearby, meaning it needed a phone. However, this situation has changed with the new series of Apple Watch models that have been released recently.
With the Apple Watch models, Watch Series 8, Watch SE (2022) and Watch Ultra, released in 2022, the series got its own GPS features. It is written in the documents of the devices that, together with the calibration, the watches can use their own special GPS capabilities.
In order to save battery life in old Apple Watch models, GPS features were throttled and depended on the iPhone. The new models, on the other hand, have their own GPS lines and can track maps entirely through this structure.
The main reason that allows such a feature to be added is, of course, battery life. For example, the use of such a GPS feature by the Watch Ultra, which offers users a 36-hour screen, is the right approach. At the same time, the Watch 8 with a battery capacity of 308mAh and the Watch SE with a battery capacity of 296mAh can work over the GPS device.
Finally, it should be noted that the Apple Watch Ultra and iPhone 14 series use the same dual-band GPS frequency. Thanks to this technology, position accuracy can be achieved up to centimetres, while the accuracy rate in single-frequency GPS is around 5 meters. In other words, GPS tests and road tracking with this smartwatch will show the same results as the company’s latest phones.
