Recently, a very popular game has been spreading rapidly on the internet: A word game called Wordle developed by Josh Wardle. Every day, the game asks users to guess a five-letter word using their six guesses. The “official” Wordle app is currently only available on the web and can only be played with a browser.
However, as is common with anything that goes viral on the internet, Wordle clones are quickly starting to appear in mobile app stores. As several people on Twitter have noticed, copycats want to use the opportunity to monetize Wordle’s popularity. Some of the apps claiming to be Wordle also ask users for money.
Apple then removed all apps with “Wordle” in their name from the app store. It is not known whether other application markets will prefer this path. Because there are still dozens of applications with “Wordle” in their name in the Google Play Store. There is no Wordle application in the Microsoft Store.
