Apple says the telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max has the most advanced camera stabilization system ever—with a combination of OIS and an autofocus 3D sensor-shift module. Apple’s Jon McCormack says the phone’s 5x zoom lens stabilizes incredibly well compared to a 10x lens.

Why is the iPhone 15 Pro Max telephoto camera limited to 5x?

According to the statement of Apple’s vice president of camera software engineering, Apple has achieved the balance at 5x zoom. The company believes that the best experience for 10x zoom can be achieved with the use of a tripod, and hand stabilization is not possible.

Maxime Veron, Apple’s senior director of iPhone product marketing, also says that the 5x lens of the iPhone 15 Pro Max opens at f / 2.8, allowing excellent light management. A lower aperture allows the camera’s sensor to capture more light.

Apple also separated Pro models within itself this year. One of the most important differences between iPhone 15 Pro Max and 15 Pro; 5x optical zoom capability. iPhone 15 Pro can do 3x optical zoom. Apple is expected to use the tetraprism lens system on both iPhone 16 Pro models next year.
