Apple has updated the usage rate data of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 on its developer website. According to the latest data, iOS 16 is now available on 90% of active iPhone models released in the last four years. Then comes iOS 15 with 8% and the remaining devices are using older software versions.
But looking at all active iPhones, the iOS 16 update is running on 81% of devices, up 28% from the iOS 16 usage data Apple released earlier this year. Apple collects this usage data based on the devices transacting in the App Store.
iPadOS 16 usage rates
iPadOS 16 now works on 76% of all iPads released in the last four years. Also, 71% of all active iPad models are running iPadOS 16, a 21% increase over previous data.
Looking at the transitions to the latest software, Apple devices continue to rank ahead of Android, largely due to the integrity of the Apple ecosystem. For example, according to data released in April of this year, Google’s Android 11 R software had the highest share of all versions at 23.5%.
The latest stable versions of iOS and iPadOS are iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5, which were released last month. The latest device usage data was revealed just days before the WWDC 2023 event, where Apple will be talking about the next big software updates, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.
iOS 17 is expected to have redesigned system apps and turn-by-turn navigation on the lock screen, and bring third-party installation functionality to iPhones, among many other features. However, it is said that the download feature from third-party sources will be limited to the European region only.
