Since October 25, Apple has allowed app and game developers to advertise their products in key sections of the App Store, such as “Today” and “You May Like”. On the first day, gambling app developers took advantage of the new feature, which caused a backlash from some developers working with Apple.
For example, app developer Simon Stovring said on Twitter that the Karamba Online Casino ad appeared in the “You might like it” section of his app page, and wrote, “I absolutely don’t like it. Apple shouldn’t ignore such ads either.” Developers Marco Arment and MacStories editor Federico Viticci made similar comments.
Turns a blind eye to gambling apps to make money
Often dissatisfied with the new App Store policy, developers accuse Apple of greed. The truth is that gambling simulators have in-game purchases and players tend to use them frequently. Apple, on the other hand, takes a commission of between 15% and 30% on every in-game purchase. In other words, according to the developers, Apple could easily have banned gambling ads from running on the App Store, but it doesn’t because it benefits.
A developer nicknamed Cabel wrote on Twitter, “I am deeply saddened that Apple has started charging money for casino ads in the App Store to elevate itself in the eyes of shareholders.”
MacRumors said the new ad policy on the App Store is part of Apple’s strategy to triple its ad revenues. Some sources have previously written that Apple’s revenue from applications and games has fallen to a record level.
