Apple will not produce leather cases for any iPhone 15 model, it seems. Instead, the company may switch to a material it has never used before.

The iPhone 15 is expected to be announced in a few weeks. Naturally, rumors about its colors and accessories began to emerge. Earlier, BGR reported that the standard iPhone 15 models may not have the leather case option, but now, a Weibo leak, confirmed by other X (ex-Twitter) users, says the iPhone 15 Pro will also forgo the leather case.

The new cases were leaked by Weibo user UnclePan; “I said before that there won’t be a leather case for the iPhone this year,” he says. According to the photo he shared on Weibo, the new cases seem to have a velvety feel, but it is not clear how they will behave in open environments. In addition, the material used seems to be a material that Apple has never used before.

Shared colors include purple, gray, dark green, navy and black. Additionally, X users Majin Bu and DuanRui shared a few photos of the upcoming Burgundy colored case. This case features the Action Button cutout, and even though they’re not Apple’s, both leaks expect them to be close to what the Cupertino giant is about to unveil.

Although it is not clear why Apple may give up the iPhone 15 leather case, there may be several different reasons. Given the company’s goal of being 100% carbon-free by 2030, including its subsidiaries, it would make sense for Apple to stop buying leather and manufacture its cases with a new material to help meet that goal.

Interestingly, Majin Bu also shared updated schematics of iPhone 15 cases the other day. It says these are offered as a “leather cover in MagSafe environmental fabric,” which may indicate Apple plans to opt for vegan leather or a similar material. The photos that By shared on his X account were actually leather, but he doesn’t think Apple will use the same material.
