Two infrastructure companies from Chile and Singapore are preparing to install the first submarine internet cable that will anchor off the Antarctic coast.
The Humboldt Cable, created by the partnership between Desarrollo País and H2 Cable, a subsidiary of BW Digital, will travel 15,000 km from Chile to Australia, stopping at both islands off the coast of New Zealand and the Chilean mainland. However, it is also of great importance that it has a 2,000 km branch connecting Antarctica, the only continent currently not benefiting from the increased speed and capacity provided by submarine cables.
The arrival of Humboldt Cable to the Antarctic coast will minimize reliance on slow and erratic satellite internet and give residents and workers in the area access to a wired connection for the first time.
This new connection will likely benefit the most from researchers operating in this region, who are struggling to transmit large volumes of data to collaborators elsewhere in the world. In addition, this cable is of great importance for the citizens of South America, who will experience a significant increase in capacity.
While the route and schedule have now been formalized, the two companies are still in talks with potential investors before initiating procurement and engaging with stakeholders at the ports.
