Samsung patented its scrollable screens last month. In addition, it also patented a second model that can be rolled and folded. Now it has patented panels that can be folded both sideways and upwards. However, the emerging information confirms that Microsoft will also use a similar technology for the new Surface Duo device.

The claim that the new Surface Duo models will have 3 screens continues

Microsoft prefers to position two different screens side by side instead of using the bendable panel technology like Surface Duo in its foldable devices. This solution, which is highly appreciated and wisely found by many, is not preferred much at the moment due to the outdated front panel design of the previous model.

However, some images of the tablet version and the new generation model of the device are said to be a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Samsung’s Fold and Huawei’s Xs with this device. In addition, the company is currently developing on a 3-screen structure that will create an alternative to Samsung’s display technology that can be folded in 2 different directions.

The biggest advantage of the device is that when it is fully folded, you can use it with one hand, like a relatively thick smartphone. However, when you expand the screens completely, it turns into a tablet where you can watch movies with your friends.

The patent image also lacks camera lenses, ports and buttons. But we would expect a consumer-ready device to include these elements. However, it is surprising to see that Microsoft may also opt for a zigzag-like folding system, although the options may not be too many when a 3-screen phone is made.

Microsoft’s patent contains plenty of text. But it is not 152 pages like the documents Samsung submitted to the World Intellectual Property Office. In addition, according to the information we have obtained, this patent was first filed in June 2020. After 1.5 years, it was registered and given to Microsoft.

While Microsoft has shown that it’s committed to folding devices with the Surface Duo 2, it’s unclear whether we’ll see a consumer device similar to this patent anytime soon. That said, companies seem to believe that devices with multiple folding capabilities could be the winning format for phones and tablets in the future.
