Another Special Android Version Coming From Google: Here’s Android 12L

Google has introduced a new version of Android designed for larger screens like tablets and foldables. Called Android 12L, this version includes a number of new features in the current operating system that are optimized for big screens.

The developer preview has been released as an SDK on Google’s site so app makers can start rolling out some of the new features that should deliver a more cohesive experience on devices with larger screens. The final version of Android 12L is expected to arrive early next year.

While Android already supports some kind of multi-window experience, its interface feels more like a bloated version of a phone operating system rather than one that makes better use of large space. Android 12L switches to a two-column layout for notification shade and lock screen when the system detects that the screen is above 600 dps. Google has announced that other system surfaces and apps will also adopt this look.

Android 12L will also have a taskbar that will make it easier to open apps under larger screens. This also simplifies the process of launching things in split-screen mode. Drag and drop an icon from the taskbar will suffice. All apps will be able to run in split screen regardless of whether they are resizable or not.
