It looks like Twitter intentionally blocks third-party clients from accessing its API. As of Thursday, third-party Twitter apps, including Tweetbot and Twitterrific, stopped working, and the issue has persisted significantly since then. Messages were shared from Twitter’s internal Slack channels, suggesting that the company was aware of the outage and likely knew why.
“The suspension of third-party apps is intentional,” reads a message seen on a channel the company’s engineers use to prioritize service disruptions. However, no reason is given.
Twitter has not made any statement on this matter. We do not expect this anyway, because the company closed its communications department after Elon Musk bought the company. Musk did not make a statement on this issue, and the manufacturers of Tweetbot, Twitterrific, Fenix and other third-party software also announced that they did not receive any information from the company.
