It has become a very common situation for big game companies to buy game studios. The latest example of this comes from CD Projekt, behind The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077. The company acquired The Molasses Flood, a Boston-based indie studio founded in 2014. The Molasses Flood is a signature studio in the legacy Halo, Bioshock, Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises.
“We’re always looking for teams that make games from the heart,” says Adam Kicinski, CD Projekt president and co-CEO. I believe they will bring talent and determination.”
“When CD PROJEKT approached us about the possibility of working together, we saw an incredible opportunity to reach a much wider audience by collaborating with a company we love, developing games in worlds we love,” said Forrest Dowling, studio head of The Molasses Flood.
Melas Flood will work with CD Projekt but will not be merged with an existing development team at the company. Also, the studio will be working on a new “ambitious project” that uses one of CD Projekt’s existing IPs. This will most likely be a game set in The Witcher or Cyberpunk 2077 universes.
