What things like John Deere tractors, Ikea smart lamps, some bacteria, Lego bricks, and pregnancy tests had in common was that they could play Doom. Included among these things is Alarmo, Nintendo’s adorable alarm clock. Taking advantage of a vulnerability in the USB port, engineers managed to run the game on the clock.
Hacker GaryOberNicht recently announced that he had found a way to run his own software on Alarmo. Now, he shared a video of himself playing Doom on an alarm clock, via his social media accounts. The watch’s own buttons were used to control the game.
Here are the moments when Doom was played
Gary said in his statement: “It is possible to play Doom entirely via USB, without modifying Alarmo.” He also shared the software and instructions he used on Github. So any Alarmo owner with enough knowledge can play Doom this way. Moreover, it is not necessary to disassemble any part of the watch to do this.
Gary also explained how this process unfolded in his blog post. First of all, he imitated the methods used by the hacker named Spinda to hack Alarmo. Afterwards, he was able to use his own software by running the alarm clock in USB mode.
Looking at how easily Gary ported Doom to Alarmo, it is possible to say that Doom will not be the only game played on this device. Of course, it will be up to Nintendo to decide how far these efforts can go.
