The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, discovered a number of new species while trying to decipher the family tree of a particular genus of marine animals, also called Promachocrinus or Antarctic feather stars.

Analyzing documents between 2008 and 2017, scientists were able to confirm samples found in previous discoveries. By analyzing the DNA and body shapes of creatures like starfish and sea cucumbers, the researchers say they were able to accurately categorize many more different members of these genera.

Scientists have classified 7 more species called Promachocrinus (Antarctic feather stars). The most notable among these is Promachocrinus fragarius, which is called the “Antarctic strawberry feather star”.

This animal has been likened to a strawberry by scientists. On the other hand, the animal has 20 arms extending from its body. Ranging in natural color from purple to deep red, this species lives somewhere between 215 feet and 3,840 feet underwater. (approx. 65 m – 1170 m)

Scientists say much more extensive research will be needed to begin to understand life in Antarctic waters.
