A group of crypto fans has announced a dubious scheme where they aim to implant Bitcoin in a mouse. The community called BitMouseDAO says the project will use “cold wallet technology” (offline storage of cryptocurrency) and then generate an offline private key.
They say they will take this key and work with a biology firm to “sort it into the ATGC sequence that corresponds to that regulated by the quaternary encoding that goes to mice for fertilization.”
When the mouse is born, it is assumed that this private key will be hidden inside its DNA, on a non-useful protein, so that the mouse will not be harmed.
“Ideally, BitMouse’s children will also carry this private key,” BitMouseDao said in a statement.
Inspired by Damien Hirst’s work with preserved dead animals, the statement reads, with physical specimens, “We can turn them into specimens for auction after they die of natural causes.”
The researchers claim that “Animal cells will remain active under this protection technique,” but it is not clear exactly what is meant by “active” because the mouse will die.
The explanation continues: “At this point, a single Bitcoin is split into multiple samples, but when someone breaks the sample to extract the genetic information, the BitMouse is removed, the other samples lose their value. On the other hand, breaking the sample may not even occur before the bitcoins lose their value.”
Of course, as this is a crypto project mentioned, NFTs are also involved, along with an image of the mouse and an unchangeable token issued for any of the mouse’s offspring.
A researcher from the group explains how the idea came about: “One night a few weeks ago, while I was about to go to sleep, an idea crossed my mind. As an artist, I put this volatile idea on paper the next morning. Over the next few weeks, to see if it was possible to carry out the experiment. I started researching for it. I was very excited as I imagined how this would affect us in the future.”
Unfortunately, the group has very little funding for the project, and since the project has no real purpose, there is a possibility that it will remain just an idea.
