With the rise of major language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Bard, and more, we continue to receive warnings about the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) from some big names like Elon Musk. Now, a group of high-profile industry leaders has issued a one-sentence statement that effectively confirms these fears: “Reducing the risk of AI extinction should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as epidemics and nuclear war.”

Under this one-sentence statement sent to the AI Safety Center, an organization that describes its mission as reducing societal-scale risks from artificial intelligence, names such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind president Demis Hassabis are signed. Turing Award-winning researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, considered by many to be the godfathers of modern artificial intelligence, are among the notable signatories.

This is the second statement we’ve come across on this subject in the past few months. In March, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and more than 1,000 others called for a six-month hiatus from AI work. “In recent months, we’ve seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict or reliably control,” the call said.
