Google’s Android operating system, which is home to billions of devices, will get its new version this year as it does every year. Although Google is in the Android 12L beta process, it has not broken the tradition and released the first developer preview version for Android 13.

With Android 13, privacy and security are at the forefront

For Android 13, priority is given to privacy and security. Android 13 aims to create a more responsible and quality platform for everyone by providing a safer environment on devices and giving users more control. The first step at this point starts with the System Photo Selector. System Photo Selector provides a standard and optimized experience for securely sharing local and cloud-based photos. With this system, users choose the photos and videos they want to share with the applications, and the photo selector API allows applications to access only the selected media. In this way, applications cannot access all media files on your device. Google plans to bring the new System Photo Picker to Android 11 and above with the MediaProvider module update.

In addition, with the NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES permission, applications can find and connect devices on the same Wi-Fi network without the need for location permission.

With Android 13, developers will prepare icons according to the dynamic theme

Another priority with Android 13 is the services provided to developers. With Android 13, app developers will be able to prepare icons for Android’s new dynamic theme. Using only black and white app icons, developers will be able to generate icons that match Android’s dynamic theme-based Material You interface model. This feature, which was previously only available to first-party Google services, will be open to everyone, and Google invites all application developers and smartphone manufacturers to use this system.

Another highlight with Android 13 is allowing apps to create system dialogs that show custom Quick Settings tiles that users can add with a single tap. In this way, faster settings can be used more easily with third-party applications. Android 13 also updates OpenJDK 11, programmable shaders, and adds new Bluetooth and Ultra wideband modules for Project Mainline.

When will Android 13 arrive?

The first developer preview of Android 13 is currently available on Pixel 4(XL), Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Android Emulator. Google recommends that general users do not download the developer version of Android 13. Google will release more developer previews throughout February and March. Android 13 is expected to go into beta in April. Google plans to have Android 13 stable in June or July. Android 13, for the general user, will most likely meet with Pixel 7 at the end of the year.
