Bill Gates thinks that interrupting the development of artificial intelligence will not solve the problems posed by the technology, Reuters reported.
Gates’ comments came after he published a letter signed by 1,100 key figures, including Elon Musk, urging all productive AI labs to stop training AI systems for half a year so that protective measures can take hold.
Speaking about the proposed hiatus, the Microsoft co-founder said, “I don’t think asking a particular group to take a break from their work will solve the difficulties. Obviously, these things have enormous benefits… What we have to do is identify the difficult areas. I really don’t understand the request to stop and not every country in the world will agree to stop and why it should be stopped. There are many different opinions in this field,” he said.
Approaching the end of March, Gates published an article on his blog explaining that artificial intelligence is as revolutionary as mobile phones and the internet. While we’ve had AI for a while through services like Alexa and Google Assistant, notable progress has been made with ChatGPT and Google Bard.
It is not yet clear how research groups will respond to the letter asking them to stop. But last weekend, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said the blocking imposed on ChatGPT by the country’s Data Protection Authority was excessive. This shows that even politicians do not agree on limiting or blocking access to these services.
