An old OpenAI leader is establishing his own artificial intelligence company

Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, an important name in the artificial intelligence world, announced its new initiative Thinking Machines Lab. The company’s goal is to make AI systems better understandable, personalized and suitable for human needs. Murati and the initiative aim to develop tools to create talented artificial intelligence systems in general.

New player in the AI world

Thinking Machines Lab, where Murati was in the CEO seat, added John Schulman, one of OpenAI’s founding partners, and Barret Zoph, former research chef of OpenAI, as CTO. Among the employees of the company are not only names from OpenAI, but also 29 employees of the leading companies such as Character AI and Google Deepmind.

According to the company’s blog post, although the capabilities of existing artificial intelligence systems develop rapidly, some basic deficiencies are still not resolved. One of the biggest problems is that only a few major research laboratories are concentrated on how advanced artificial intelligence models are trained. This makes it difficult for the public to become aware of the AI and to make privatization for personal needs.

Thinking Machines Lab aims to improve multimodal systems and ensure that people work more effectively with artificial intelligence. The company will focus on producing models that will revolutionize in areas such as science and software engineering. In this process, security will be one of the most important priorities.

From Tesla to OpenAI, from there to your own initiative

After leaving Tesla, Murati, who came to OpenAI in 2018 as the Vice President in charge of Artificial Intelligence and Partnerships, was promoted to CTO in 2022. Murati, who also served as a temporary CEO for a short time after Sam Altman’s sudden separation from the OpenAI CEO in November 2023, left the company last year. Murati managed projects such as Chatgpt, Dall-E and Github Copilot in OpenAI.

Thinking Machines Lab will show the next process in the AI world, but the list of initiatives of those who leave OpenAI swells. Ilya Sutskeve, one of the high -profile names, founded Safe Superintelligigence. Anthropic, one of the biggest rivals of OpenAI, was also founded by former employees.
