While researching the subject, we came across many names in the Sold variant. Especially the girl version “Satı” has the same meaning as this name. However, this is not something well known in Anatolia; Since people took the names of their grandparents, they did not care much about the name given to them.
Of course, we think that no one wants their child to be bad, of course they don’t, but where did they come from, these Sellers, the Sold Ones?
Births took place naturally in Anatolia in ancient times.
In those times when there was no such facility as a hospital, of course, diseases could not be treated immediately. On average, one in every 4-5 babies born in a natural environment died. Families who lose children repeatedly believe that this is a cursed situation and that it is caused by an evil force. So it’s a kind of Shamanism ritual.
The belief that evil forces would kill the newborn child caused the child to grow up in another home. It was thought that a child raised in someone else’s home was purified from evil spirits and thus survived. This child was bought by his parents much later, and he was given names such as “Satulmuş, Satılgan, Satı, Satıvaldı, Satdı, Satkın”.
According to belief, an evil spirit that exists underground steals and sells children.
Families who did not want their children to die did not hesitate to give their children such names. This has become a tradition. Today, in some regions, people who still do not have children make a wish under a large tree near a waterfall, believing that children are sold there. After this ritual, which is a kind of worship, those who have a child by chance give the child the names “Satlamış” and “Satı” in the same way. It is known that this practice is quite common in Amasya.
Another example of this is hidden in the name “Yaşar”.
The story of how this name was given is almost the same. In Anatolia, naming the next born baby “Yasar” because of children dying from diseases is a kind of ritual that the family thinks will ensure the baby’s survival.
In short, “Sold” and its derivative names, which may be mocked when seen, were actually a practice that families did to avoid losing their only children. In the past, children born had a hard time holding on to life because the conditions were not like today. Therefore, placing hope on such names is undeniable in terms of the psychology of that period.
