Space hosts many celestial bodies apart from planets and stars. Some of these celestial bodies have the potential to pose significant dangers to us. We have been observing space for a long time in order to predict the dangers that asteroids and other celestial bodies may pose.

A newly detected asteroid could pose a threat to our world

Observing dangers from outer space, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory has detected the first potentially dangerous asteroid. An algorithm revealed as a result of the work of the observatory reveals that an asteroid may pose a danger to our world in the future.

The asteroid 2022 SF289 is currently located approximately 600 million kilometers from Earth. This celestial body, which is approximately 180 meters tall, is in the potentially dangerous asteroid (PHA) class. This asteroid, which is about 4 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun, may pose a danger to us due to its orbit.

Potentially dangerous asteroids are defined by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as celestial bodies that are considered large enough to survive as they pass through our planet’s atmosphere and can cause major damage in the area they fall.

However, experts state that there is no threat for now. It is emphasized that asteroids, which were previously described as potentially dangerous, entered our solar system, but left without posing any danger. Experts expect the same for the asteroid 2022 SF289.

Another important point about 2022 SF289 is that it was detected by a new algorithm called HelioLinc3D. Thanks to this algorithm, it is stated that celestial objects that may pose a danger to the Earth can be revealed by making less observations. In this way, the occurrence of overlooked hazards will be prevented.

Space is full of many unknowns. Mankind, on the other hand, is constantly observing space and trying to protect itself from possible dangers. So what do you think about a possible asteroid danger? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
