AMD has officially unveiled the Radeon Pro W7900 and Radeon Pro W7800, the first workstation graphics cards based on RDNA 3 GPUs. AMD Radeon Pro W7900 and Radeon Pro W7800 graphics cards will enter the market as the first workstation parts to feature the Navi 31 “RDNA 3” GPU and will stand out from the competition with their price.

First workstation cards with chiplet design

Introduced workstation cards offer exceptional performance per dollar compared to their competitors, and are better suited for content creation, rendering, etc., compared to the previous generation. It is said that it greatly accelerates the workloads needed in workstations such as According to AMD, the gains are huge thanks to RDNA 3.

The new processing units deliver approximately 50 percent more ray tracing performance per processing unit than the previous generation, by splitting resources between processing, AI and ray tracing to make the most of each transistor. The AMD RDNA 3 architecture also includes optimizations for AEC, D&M, and M&E workflows for rendering, video editing, and multitasking.

The world’s first workstation GPUs with a chiplet design, the Radeon Pro W7900 and Radeon Pro W7800s provide more than 2x the performance of the previous AMD RDNA 2 architecture with AI instructions and increased AI throughput. However, up to 48GB of GDDR6 memory, DisplayPort 2.1 and AV1 Encode/Decode are among the highlights of the series.

AMD Radeon Pro W7900 specifications

The flagship AMD Radeon Pro W7900 comes with a full-size Navi 31 XTX GPU with 96 Compute Units and 6144 stream processors. The GPU is equipped with 48GB of GDDR6 memory running on a 384-bit bus interface and offering 864GB/s bandwidth. While the card has a TDP of 295W, it promises 61.3 TFLOPs of performance in single precision (FP32) workloads. There are 3 DisplayPort 2.1 and a single Mini DisplayPort 2.1 output on the card.

AMD Radeon Pro W7800 specifications

The AMD Radeon Pro W7800 has a slightly cropped Navi 31 XT GPU with 70 Compute Units and 4480 stream processors. The GPU is blended with 32GB of GDDR6 memory running on a 256-bit bus interface and offering a peak bandwidth of 576GB/s. While the TDP of the card is 260W, the FP32 performance is at the level of 45.2 TFLOPs. There are also 3 DisplayPort 2.1 and a single Mini DisplayPort 2.1 output on this card.

Radeon Pro W7900 and Pro W7800 prices

In terms of pricing, the AMD Radeon Pro W7900 comes in at less than half the price of Nvidia’s flagship workstation graphics card, the RTX 6000 Ada: $3999. Radeon Pro W7800 stands out with its price of $ 2499. AMD will begin releasing both cards in the second quarter of 2023.

Higher performance for half the price

In terms of performance, considering the price, we can say that both the W7900 and W7800 almost drown their competitors in dust. In the SPECviewperf test, the Pro W7900 offers almost the same performance as the RTX 6000 Ada, which is twice as expensive and consumes more power, easily beating the more expensive RTX A6000. The Pro W7800 easily surpasses the RTX A6000, which is also twice as expensive, but I should also mention that the amount of memory here is lower against AMD.
The differences are wide when considering Autodesk 3DS MAX performance. Both Radeon Pro W7900 and W7800 manage to outperform their competitors in the test. The fact that Radeon Pro W7800 surpasses the RTX 6000 Ada, which is 3.5 times more expensive than itself, proves that AMD has accomplished a great job.
