READING NOW AMD lowered the power consumption of Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX
Last month, AMD shared the Adrenaline 22.12.2 WHQL driver that improves the power efficiency of the RDNA 3 architecture RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX cards. Now the flagship cards have been thoroughly tested by ComputerBase with old and new drivers. How much does the new driver affect video playback and idle power consumption? Here are the results

RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX now consume less power

Tests with the old drive show that the RX 7900 XT consumes 71W while the RX 7900 XTX consumes 81W during a video playing on YouTube. But the December driver update reduces the power consumption of both boards to 46W and 54W. While this is a good improvement, it should be noted that the new cards lag behind the RTX 4080, which exhibits 30W to 34W power consumption at a similar workload.

ComputerBase also discovered that the new driver has a positive effect on power consumption in games. But that change only happens when frame rates are capped. However, in Doom Eternal tests, which are limited to 2K resolution and 144 FPS, the RX 7900 XT consumes 34 percent less power and the RX 7900 XTX consumes 57 percent less power.
