AMD introduced its mid-range Ryzen 7040U processors aimed at lightweight devices such as thin computers and handheld consoles. The low-power “U” series, which is included in the AMD Phoenix family, comes with a clock speed of 5.1 GHz, up to 8 cores and RDNA 3 graphics unit. Here are the details

AMD Ryzen 7040U processors introduced

First introduced by AMD last January, AMD Phoenix APUs combine Zen4 and RDNA3 architecture for mobile platforms. At this point, we can say that the APU family updated with the low-power U series will be the successor of the Zen3+ Rembrandt Ryzen 6000 series.

Ryzen 7040U series, which draws attention with efficiency and battery performance according to AMD, is based on TSMC’s 4nm process node and consists of four APUs in the 15-30W TDP range. These are Ryzen 7 7840U, Ryzen 5 7640U, Ryzen 5 7540U and Ryzen 3 7440U, respectively.

Starting with the top model of the family, Ryzen 7 7840U offers 24MB cache, 8 cores and 16 threads, 3.3GHz base and 5.1GHz increased clock speed. On the graphics side, the new processor will be accompanied by 12 processing units based on the RDNA 3 architecture and Radeon 780M with GPU speeds up to 2.7 GHz.

A sub-model Ryzen 5 7640U will come with a 2.6GHz Radeon 760M with 3.5GHz base 4.9GHz peak frequency, 6 cores 12 threads, 22MB cache and 8 computing units. Another Ryzen 5 model, the Ryzen 5 7540U, which maintains the similar core configuration with its older brother, comes with 3.2GHz base 4.9GHz increased clock speed, 22MB cache and Radeon 760M.

The entry model of the family, the Ryzen 3 7440U, will offer 4 cores and 8 threads, 3.0GHz base 4.7GHz maximum clock speed and 12MB cache capacity. On the graphics side, the new processor will be powered by Radeon 740M with 4 cores and 2.5GHz speeds. In the announcement, AMD did not share any release date for the 7040U series. However, notebook and handheld solutions powered by new APUs are expected to be available very soon.
