The adventure and journey that started with Zen architecture seems to take AMD to the gold-filled chest at the end of the rainbow. On the other hand, Intel is moving away from the days when it had a large part of the market. According to data from Mercury Research, AMD has increased its processor market share.

AMD comes with strong strides

According to the shared data, AMD increased its market share from 27.7 percent in the first quarter of 2022 to 34.6 percent in the first quarter of 2023, resulting in an increase of 6.9 percent. Intel has dropped from 72.3 percent to 65.4 percent, but the company still owns almost two-thirds of the x86 CPU market. By the way, keep in mind that these numbers cover all processors. In other words, these ratios include desktop processors, laptops and consoles.
In a separate screenshot shared, server CPU market shares are also included, excluding IoT. As you can see, AMD increased its server market share to 18 percent in the first quarter of 2023, with an annual increase of 6.3 percent. Intel saw a 6.3 percent decrease in its market share in the same time period, reducing its share to 82 percent.

Obviously, Intel’s undisputed leadership remains, but AMD’s rise is interesting. On the other hand, growth on the server side is more valuable to AMD because the size of the gain here is larger. Although Intel is still a little ahead on the server side in single-core performance, AMD continues to win the companies on the maximum core and cost side. Intel aims to launch more competitive products, especially in the server market, towards the end of this year. It will be interesting to see if AMD can maintain its momentum in gaining market share when that happens.
