Starfield launched with a lot of expectations it was asked to live up to. From the expansive universe to the interactive environmental elements, Starfield is designed to fully immerse players in an endless intergalactic landscape. Given Bethesda’s attention to even the smallest detail, the absence of stars illuminating the sky of any planet on AMD graphics cards has apparently been overlooked. Starfield, Bethesda’s least problematic launch, looks like it’s in need of some quality-of-life updates.

Starfield’s stars are missing on AMD graphics cards

Since last week, Oyunca started reporting that they cannot see the sun, or rather the star of the planet, on any planet in systems with AMD graphics cards. In the screenshots shared on social media, it is seen that light is coming from the light source as expected, but the source itself is not visible. Of course, for a planet, these sources are stars.

While Radeon 6000 and 7000 series users cannot see all the stars and suns on the daylight side of any planet, Nvidia and Intel users in the same locations can observe normally rendered stars and other atmospheric effects. The screenshot above this paragraph is of AMD RX 7800 XT. As you can see, there is no problem with shadows and lighting. However, in the Nvidia RTX 4070 and Intel Arc A770, which we have given as side mirrors right below, the light source, that is, the star, is also visible.
However, this problem is found in most, but not all, planetary systems. For example, in New Atlantis, stars are processed as they should be on all cards. Of course, this isn’t a game-breaking issue, but once you notice it, it’s hard to ignore.

On the other hand, it is unclear whether the problem is caused by AMD or Bethesda. It is also interesting that there is such a problem in the game in which AMD is a partner. Besides all this, Starfield runs very successfully on AMD cards in terms of performance. However, the same does not apply to Nvidia and Intel cards. If you are experiencing performance issues on these systems, you can update their drivers and wait for Bethesda to release a patch.
