AMD Instinct MI400 series on the way
AMD has officially confirmed its intention to develop the “MI400” Instinct series. This confirmation actually came as no big surprise, as Lenovo’s VP has already confirmed the presence of next-gen accelerators on AMD’s agenda. During the company’s recent Q2 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su signaled future Instinct MI400 AI accelerators without disclosing any details. Lisa Su said during the interview: “Looking at these workloads and the investments we’ve made, we definitely believe we have a very competitive and capable hardware roadmap, not just today, but going forward with our next-generation MI400 series and the like. Frankly, the discussion about AMD has always been about the software roadmap, and we’re seeing some change on the software side here.”
In the CEO’s statement, it is stated that the Instinct series has very powerful hardware in terms of hardware and offers high-end features. However, it also appears that AMD is lacking in software development that includes extensive support for productive AI applications. In this area, the rival green team is at the forefront with features such as “Nvidia ACE” and “DLSDR” for now. AMD plans to improve things on the software side, so we could see major changes made by AMD that will upgrade the Instinct platform.
As previously discussed, alongside the next-gen MI400 Instinct lineup, AMD has also announced its plans to develop “cropped” MI300 variants like Nvidia for Chinese markets in order to comply with US trade policies. AMD will soon begin to offer relatively weaker AI solutions to the Chinese market.
