James Bond, Rocky and RoboCop movies are now Amazon. The company’s acquisition of film and TV studio MGM for $8.45 billion was completed. European Union antitrust regulators ratified the deal this week. They determined that there wasn’t much overlap between the two companies and that “MGM’s content cannot be considered essential” when compared to other studios.
Amazon said in a press release, “It’s part of the work of MGM, Prime Video and Amazon Studios to offer customers a variety of entertainment options.” The studio has more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV series episodes. These movies and TV series have 180 Oscars and 100 Emmy Awards. MGM movies include classics like Thelma and Louise, The Silence of the Lambs, The Magnificent Seven, and Raging Bull.
Following the Amazon acquisition, the vast majority of MGM movies and TV shows are expected to switch to Prime Video after theatrical releases and after deals with other streaming platforms expire.
