Digital platforms, which are now used by almost everyone, have begun to turn to different areas besides movies and TV series. For example, Netflix announced when it will broadcast its first live broadcast the other day. Now the information has shown that Amazon will make a different move.
Amazon offered many content to its users for monthly fees with its Prime Video service, which is also available in our country. In addition, the company had moves in sports. For example, the tech giant signed an 11-year deal last year for the broadcasts of the American football league NFL. The information released today showed that Amazon has much bigger plans for sports broadcasts.
Amazon is working on an app that will only feature sports content
A report by The Information citing a person directly involved in the matter showed that Amazon plans to release a separate app that will only feature sports content. This new development comes after CEO Andy Jassy said the company will increase its moves on such services.
In his recent statements, Jassy highlighted the issue of live sports broadcasts, even though Amazon has started to reduce costs in some areas (such as mass layoffs) and stated that they can continue to invest in this issue. Apart from the NFL, the company also had agreements with venues such as MLB (US national baseball league) and WNBA (US women’s basketball league) to broadcast certain matches.
There is no official statement from Amazon about the application yet. There is no information on when the app will be released. We can guess that the company may move the sports content it publishes on Prime Video to this application and want to increase its revenue by charging an additional fee. Sports content currently available on Prime Video can be accessed directly with a Prime subscription. Apart from these, it is possible to say that agreements with more leagues can be made with the new application.
In the past months, allegations have been made that Netflix is also trying to make moves on live sports broadcasts. However, CEO Ted Sarandos put an end to the rumors by stating that they did not have such plans.
