As we all know, the effects of climate changes on our planet are increasing day by day. These changes threaten the nature of the Earth and pose deadly dangers to many regions and living things. Experts underline that it is necessary to constantly take measures in this regard.
The Amazon rainforest, which is defined as the lungs of the world, is also one of the regions affected by this situation. Global warming and deforestation seriously threaten life and nature in the region. New statements made by scientists also reveal that the condition of forests is much worse than expected.
“Amazon is on the verge of collapse”
A research team consisting of a group of scientists made statements to News Scientist about the state of the rainforest. The team said the forests are on the verge of collapse, the situation is getting worse and the Amazon could turn into “dry savannahs”, which are very dry grasslands, in the next five years.
Luciana Gatti, a senior climate change researcher from the team at Brazil’s National Institute of Space Studies, said that rainforests could spread catastrophic disasters in the next five years: “The situation on the Amazon is very urgent, I can say we are on the verge of collapse. If we don’t act now, things will get much worse. It’s a nightmare. ”
In his statements, Gatti drew attention to a report published last month on Amazon. According to the statements, it was stated in the report that the rainforests were significantly damaged by the rapidly increasing global warming and deforestation in Brazil. It was also emphasized in the report that the Brazilian state could not prevent illegal deforestation, and even allowed it. Another study published in the past months revealed that the Amazon broke the deforestation record in October.
Another of the researchers, in his statements, stated that the warming and deforestation that may occur between 20 and 25 percent may lead to an ecological overthrow. As a result, it was stated that forests could turn into ‘dry savannas’.
“Immediate action must be taken”
So what should be done about it? According to Mercedes Bustamante of the University of Brasilia, it is still possible to take steps to prevent these dire consequences. Authorities need to take immediate action and stop deforestation in Brazil, Bustamante said. After that, a big ‘afforestation’ campaign should be started and everyone should participate in this campaign.
But can these measures be adjusted to meet the next five years? We can say that this does not seem very realistic for now. Still, experts think that the decisions taken by the country’s officials at the UN Climate Summit (COP26) held last month may play a role in slowing down forestation, at least to some extent.
