Years ago, Amazon introduced the Alexa voice assistant, which works just like Google Assistant and Apple Siri. But Alexa and others have become increasingly forgotten services due to their limited impact on monetization. However, in light of the revolution initiated by ChatGPT, it is stated that Amazon plans to turn Alexa into a productive artificial intelligence by empowering it with large language models.

Alexa is refreshing

Behind these claims are leaked internal documents. According to the quote, Amazon is relying on the large language model (LLM) it has developed internally that will power a newer and more capable Alexa. Amazon calls its LLM the Alexa Teacher Model, but a company spokesperson says it’s working on “more generalized and capable” models that will make Alexa “more proactive and talkative.”

According to the leaked documents, Amazon envisions Alexa appearing as a thinking entity rather than “grabbing information from a database.” The documents specifically mention how the new Alexa will make media recommendations, news distribution, and storytelling more conversational. An example of this is when a user says, “Alexa, find an HBO or Netflix show where rich people go on vacation to Sicily or Hawaii.” Alexa understands that this is The White Lotus and continues the conversation about the subject, directing the user to the free trial of HBO.

On the other hand, Amazon’s plans to revive Alexa are a contradiction in themselves. As it will be remembered, the company fired about 2000 people from the department working on the Alexa voice assistant months ago. On the other hand, voice assistants that can speak with low latency in the style of ChatGPT may be a new line of business for companies.
