Gabriel Weinberg, CEO of privacy-focused alternative search engine DuckDuckGo, announced that disinformation websites prepared by Russia will be pushed lower in search results. Gabriel Weinberg says that these approaches were put forward in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Weinberg also announced that information boxes will be placed around search results to highlight quality information about events taking place in Ukraine.
Thus, DuckDuckGo is added to the list of services that respond to the Russian invasion. While Google and Microsoft banned RT and Sputnik from their own platforms, YouTube and Facebook announced that they would take measures against Russian content creators spreading false information. YouTube has even removed government-sponsored Russian channels from its platform for worldwide implementation.
This move of DuckDuckGo gets different reactions from users. Some say it’s normal for disinformation to rank low because they want to find the right information in searches. Others accuse the company of failing to keep that promise after it came forward for allegedly not using filters that other search providers use to change the results that different people see.
If you’re a DuckDuckGo user, you’ll start seeing this effect in search results after a few days before updates become fully available.
