An in-house Business Case presentation, made public as part of the FTC hearing, revealed the company’s intent to develop a cloud-based Windows 365 service for a wider audience. Microsoft’s goal is to create a complete Windows operating system in the cloud that can be accessed from any device. Introduced in 2021, Windows 365 was only available to commercial customers. But Microsoft has already integrated it into the Windows 11 operating system.
The goal is a consistent operating system
The upcoming Windows 11 update will include the Windows 365 Boot feature, which will allow devices to run the cloud-based Windows 365 operating system directly instead of a native OS. A Windows 365 Switch feature will also be available, allowing you to instantly switch between the local and cloud operating system.
The idea of moving Windows to the cloud is important to ensure a consistent operating system across different hardware platforms, not just the classic x86 architecture, but also ARM. Microsoft is currently developing a Windows version for ARM-based Surface Pro X devices and is also working on its own processors with this architecture.
