Europe’s Trace Gas Orbiter Mars probe sent a coded message toward Earth on May 24 at 15:00. Sixteen minutes later, a global attempt was launched to decode this coded signal, which was received by three major radio telescopes on Earth.

This initiative is A Sign in Space, a project led by Daniela de Paulis, a visiting artist at the SETI Institute in California and the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia. The aim of this initiative is first contact simulation.

‘Alien’ signal

De Paulis said in a statement, “Humanity has sought meaning in powerful and transformative phenomena throughout history. Receiving a message from an extraterrestrial civilization will be a profoundly transformative experience for all humanity. The A Sign in Space project encourages an open-ended search for meaning across all cultures and disciplines. provides an unprecedented opportunity to concretely rehearse and prepare for this scenario through global collaboration.” said.

The Green Bank Observatory, together with the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope Array in Northern California and the Medicina Radio Astronomy Station, owned by the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics, listened to the signal from the Trace Gas Orbiter orbiter today.

Researchers at each of these facilities will now process the signal and make it available to colleagues around the world and the general public. The project team wants people from different backgrounds to study the signal and do their best to decipher it. You can download signal files from the website here.
