On October 30, three days after the release of Age of Empires 4, it was announced that the game had set a new record for active players on Steam. For a short time, 67,896 players were online at the same time, according to SteamDB.
It’s clear that the release of Age of Empires 4 is going as Microsoft Relic Entertainment had hoped. The new real-time strategy game received mostly positive reviews from gamers and has earned its place at the top of the current best-selling games on Steam.
Nearly 70,000 players on Steam
Age of Empires 4 player count also looks good so far. According to SteamDB, the game has hit 69,366 simultaneous players, its peak ever. So this many people were online at the same time.
This player count is impressive, especially when compared to older Age of Empires games. The final release of Age of Empires 2 was the most successful release before, but even it was able to reach a maximum of 38,725 concurrent players. It is followed by the HD version with around 28,000 players and the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires 3, with over 20,000 simultaneous players active.
In the meantime, it should be noted that all these numbers only appeared on the Steam platform. Recent versions of older Age of Empires games, such as Age of Empires 4, are also available in parallel on the Microsoft Store. Additionally, Age of Empires 4 is part of Xbox Game Pass, which you can play by subscription. Therefore, it is a fact that the actual number of players in the game is much higher than the number announced by Steam.
