TikTok said in February that it was working on new ways to age-restrict certain types of content to improve security features for teens. Now, the company has shared more information about the rating system, called content levels, which it plans to roll out in the coming weeks.

Videos will not be shown

According to TikTok’s statement, we will see a system similar to the rating system used by the movie and video game industry. Videos from young users’ posts that are considered adult will be filtered out. It will apply to videos that do not violate TikTok rules, which may be inappropriate for younger users.

Age limit notice

With the change, teens ages 13 to 17 will see an age limit notification instead of a video when they come across a video with adult or complex themes. It was not shared how the rating will be determined or what criteria will be used to classify the videos so that those under the age of 18 do not encounter such videos on TikTok.

Update coming soon

TikTok noted that the feature is still in the testing phase and they plan to add additional options in the future. In the meantime, the platform also brings a filtering feature for the topics that you do not want to be seen on the page. The update, which is expected to be released next week, will allow users to mute certain words and hashtags they no longer want to see in their videos.
