Elon Musk says that Blue Origin is deliberately trying to provoke Jeff Bezos to make more progress. “As a friend of mine said, he should spend more time in Blue Origin and less time in the hot tub,” Musk says. This message of Musk is one of the messages that has been seen frequently in the 15-year rivalry between the 2 richest men in the world.

It is known by everyone that there is a great rivalry between the two richest people in the world, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. The rivalry between the two may have first started in 2004, when they met at a dinner party.

What Happened in 2004?

1/ In 2004, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos met for a meal to discuss space.

It was one of their few in-person interactions.

The conversation they had perfectly captures the different approaches they’ve taken to space exploration.

Business Insider reported that in 2004, both Blue Origin and SpaceX were still in their infancy, and neither company had launched any rockets into space. However, this did not prevent the rivalry from jumping into flames. As the duo discuss their plans for reusable rockets, something suddenly seems to go wrong.

Recounting the event in Christian Davenport’s new book, Space Barons, it is written that Musk said after the meeting, “I tried to give the best advice I could, but Bezos ignored it.”

Earlier this year, Trung Phan, a columnist for business newspaper The Hustle, used the laughing pose of Musk and Bezos at a restaurant table in an article. Phan wrote that this photo was taken in 2004 and that this could be the controversial dish where the rivalry started.

In response to the photo, Musk tweeted, “Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 17 years.”

The Last Period in the Rivalry Between the Duo

The space rivalry between the two continues fiercely and tensely. Elon Musk’s company SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin companies are working seriously on space travel. Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, had initiated legal proceedings against NASA’s selection of SpaceX for the construction of the spacecraft that would take the astronauts to the Moon, and tensions had risen.

The rivalry, which has been going on for 15 years, continues with mutually pointed messages between the two.

New Competitive Zone Wealth

Bezos has been the richest person in the world since about 2017, but in January 2021, Musk peaked when Tesla stock hit all-time highs. Musk and Bezos swapped places a few times during the year, but recently Musk has outstripped Bezos’s $199 billion fortune, with a net worth of $255 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

Musk used this as an opportunity to make fun of Bezos. After becoming the richest person in the world, Musk emailed Forbes, referring to Bezos, saying, “I’m going to send Jeffrey B. a silver medal and a giant 2 figure.”

Musk’s Recent Messages

Musk recently said that Bezos was “taking himself a little too seriously” and deliberately trying to provoke the former Amazon CEO.
“In some ways, I try to encourage him to spend more time at Blue Origin so that they can make more progress,” Mus told the Financial Times.

Musk added that while Bezos has “pretty good engineering talent,” he doesn’t spend a lot of “mental energy” going into details. “As a friend of mine said, he should spend more time in Blue Origin and less time in the hot tub,” Musk said.
